Katz Glaze Calculator

Use at your own risk. This calculator may not be accurate. Do not use to determine safety of glazes.

  1. This input page and the script which processes it are designed for stoneware glazes. for an example of what it will do try these values Na20=.15 K2O=.15 CaO=.4 MgO= .1 BaO=.1 SrO= .1 Al2O3=.4 SiO2=4.7
  2. Currently there is no ZnO or colorants. There is no KNAO choice. B2O3 has not been properly proofed. LIke real glaze calculations the input is limited by the ingredients available.
  3. Currently the list of used ingredients is: Custer Feldspar, Neph Sy. Calcium Carbonate, Dolomite, Strontium Carb., Barium Carb. , Lithium Carb. EPK, Silica, Ultrox, CadyCal, Red Iron Oxide.
  4. Negative results are an indication that your specified formula cannot be made into a recipe with these ingredients. For Example:
    1. A negative amount for dolomite generally indicates that you need to specify some small amount of MgO because EPK (and CadyCal) contain some MgO.
    2. because this program actually determines the balance needed for potash and soda negative amounts of Neph Sy usually indicate that you need to replace some K2O with Na2O. Negative Custer amounts indicate the opposite substitution.

CadyCal is now working as the source for boron.

History. This program was written by me originally in PLC when I was at the University of Michigan for the University's mainframe in 1975. It was run with a series of punch cards. The program came first followed by a series of cards punched with Mol amounts in a predetermined order. It cost about $0.23 to run using the University's "funny money". I use Richard Burkett's Hyperglaze but have also used John Hesselbreth's Glazemaster. Insight was the first commercial software that I bought back in its DOS days. They all have things to recommend them. There are also freeware programs and an online program that is in many many ways superior to mine. Mine does, however do some of the work for you.
