- Making Cone Pads
It is best to make cones in advance. This allows the clay base of the cone pad to dry out to
prevent it from blowing up.
- Lay out your cones in the proper order. The largest number with a 0 in front of it goes first then
the cones from 1 through 10 go in the usual 1, 2, 3 order.
- Roll out a coil about 5/8 of an inch wide.
- The proper angle and direction of falling is indicated by the slope of the bottom of the cone.
- Push the cones into the clay with the numbers on the side. Pinch the clay around the base of the
cone. Be sure the cones are about an 1/8 of an inch apart. They must be close together so they
can all be seen through the peepholes of the kiln.
- After the cones are in place make a tray out of clay to catch the melting cones.
- After finished making cones put away cones, close up the clay for making the cone pads, throw
away empty cone boxes, and clean up any mess that was made.
- If it is your first few firings, have an instructor check your conepacks
- When possible use standard TAMUCC Conepacks.
