Hello Leedom and Louise,

I will ask P. Yee if he knows of any old inground kilns. Yee was a big help on my first trip but does not get around much anymore. Suwanee says that she might know of one. I did not learn of any in the village yesterday but I should have asked Pu Yai Mien but forgot. He is still firing his 10 year old kiln, its sort of a hybrid,, longer, side door for loading, its like some kilns in Ubon but not as long. He fires meter wide flower pots and has big troubles with cracks in the bottoms. Stress across the bottom is mostly related to the square of the diameter so bigger pots are bigger problems, but drying uneveness is likely a bigger problem and bigger pots are harder to manage. In general people do not seem to listen to me when I try to help. I may write a letter to the local U. prof that helps around here.He is more likely to get traction. I have a correction. Trying to pin down a more exact date, I found that Suwanee arrive around late November early December 1975, a year after 14 October 1974, not before. I really enjoyed the Queen Sirikit Fabric Museum at Wat Phra Kaeow a few weeks ago. I have no idea if the displays are redundant with others around the country, but if was nice to see it. I went and visited one of the potters who came to the US in 1991 for NCECA yesterday. He is 93 according to his daughter. He is a lot of fun although he has gotten very hard for me to understand. He used to be able to switch to central Thai to talk with me, and that ability is now gone. He is remarkably sharp, but blind. He asked about Kurt Weiser who ran the conference.

The air quality today is about as bad as its been. I hope it is better in late January. Lots of smoke.

Louis
