OnWhiting

Whiting is a ceramic material. The name is commonly thought of as meaning just "calcium carbonate". Back when it had an active definition with the ASTM it was defined with a range of compositions aligning with typical limestone compositions from calcium rich to dolomitic limestones. The 2006 Indian standard, https://law.resource.org/pub/in/bis/S02/is.63.2006.pdf , lists it as a natural limestone with 90% +- 5% calcium carbonate. This is enough variation to make a difference in a glaze. As a feild we should use more specific vocabulary specifying calcium carbonate when that is what we mean. If we do not care about included silica or magnesium carbonate then the label Limestone might be a better label.
