HurriCationMentalHealthStrategyDuringEvacucationsStrategyLeaving home, evacuating, for a severe storm comes with a certain amount of stress. Once away from home, there is little you can do for your house and property. The normal function of worry is to keep your mind focused on a problem, but when there is nothing you can do about the problem it serves no functional purpose. Once away from home, with the possiblity of your home becoming a disaster, mental health becomes an even more important asset. Chill! Find a way to have fun. Forget about what you cannot control, the worry does not help. Short evacuations should mostly be treated as vacation. Eat well, go to the movies, thrift store, fishing, hiking, walk the dog. Do whatever is going to be fun, distracting. without stress. This will maintain a sense of well being, and if nothing else, it will be fun. When it is time to go back you can be serious. This process, this thing you are doing is a hurrication! You will be more able to deal withever stress when you do return because of the good time you just had. Someone in your group, your pod, should be watching what is happening back at your home, but likely should not be communicating much about it. What good will it do other than add stress? There are some limits to this. Perhaps you will need to assemble rebuilding supplies, get ready to apply for aid or some sort or make an insurance claim. I am certain that sometimes hurrication is not as functional as work, but often its the most functional thing you can do. |
